An international Engineering & Project Management consulting firm is looking for various Head of Technical – Rail Design to be based in Gauteng & Cape Town.
Technical Director – Rail Design Management
The responsibilities of this role include:
- Works with rail discipline leadership to prepare proposals and do assessment of multidisciplinary packages of work. Categorizes packages of work, elaborates project execution plans and defines the delivery strategy, including composition of design teams across different disciplines and locations.
- Responsible for leading a design team working for internal clients, integrating resources from different global offices.
- Accountable for the development of delivery methodologies which manage risk, maximize on opportunities for the pursuit of delivering multi-disciplinary projects to budget and schedule for our clients.
- Initiates and directs the planning, development, and continuous monitoring of the project scope, resources, procedures, budget and schedule for the packages of work allocated to the project team.
- Reviews project key performance indicators and forecasts any modifications to schedules, cost estimates, and financial reports, and effectively reconciles risks to commitments that may exceed assigned schedules and budgets. Reports KPIs and metrics regularly.
- Delivers effective communication inclusive of internal clients and team members to clarify expectations and requirements.
- Performs quality control reviews of work developed by others. Approves and signs off on work.
- Can apply principles of rail System Engineering including requirements specification and management, designing for robustness (Whole System Lifecycle), Safety by Design and System Integration and Verification.
- Trains, mentors and evaluates less experienced staff.
Minimum Requirements:
- Proven track record of technical work on railways design collaborating with international and multi-cultural teams (+10 years), combined with design management experience (+5 years) on large international Railways Projects.
- Previous Contractor’s Design Manager experience in railways projects could be considered favorably.
- Strong technical leadership of teams in the delivery of projects focused on delivering for the Client.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work within teams or in a wider collaboration.
- Experience with international regulations and standards (i.e AASTHO; Australian Codes; British Standards, etc.).
- Proven commitment with Quality Control Policy and Quality Management System.
- Team management experience.
- Experience working in the UK (Network Rail), North America region / Australia will be considered favorably.
- 15+ Years’ experience after obtainment of Qualification of which 5+ years should be in a technical supervisory role.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science / Engineering degree in Civil Engineering (or Railways Engineering) from an accredited University. Master of Science / Engineering will be considered favourably.
- Professionally registered as an Engineer with ECSA or equivalent professional body is required.
- UK, US and/or Australia Professional Engineer license will be considered favourably.
- PMP or PRINCE2 certification would be considered favourably.

- Reviews project key performance indicators and forecasts any modifications to schedules, cost estimates, and financial reports, and effectively reconciles risks to commitments that may exceed assigned schedules and budgets.
